Summary: What’s Not So Great About This Softener 

Lower Quality, Doesn’t Last as Long, Not Ideal for Very Hard Water.

To put it simply – an older water softener means an older design. When looking at the technical bits, the Crown is lacking in terms of its specification and flow rate. What does this mean for you? It means that this product may struggle to soften very hard water. It also means that there could be pressure drops when multiple appliances are running or people are using the water at once.

In terms of efficiency, the crown is great and relatively similar to other models on the market, so running costs will only be very slightly higher.

The Pros 

• Its size. It is small and relatively easy to fit under the sink.
• A yes for combi boilers. It has an operating pressure designed for combi boilers and high flow systems.
• Non-electric and relatively efficient. You don’t need to set any regeneration timers and it has relatively low running costs.
• Is a twin tank softener. Meaning uninterrupted soft water.
• A 5 year warranty with 2 years labour. This can depend on where you purchase the product but a labour warranty can be an added extra and is always nice to have.

The Cons 

• Lower Flow Rate. A lower flow rate means this softener may not have the power to provide the whole home with soft water, if the water is being used by more than one person. The system is not ideal for homes with 3 bathrooms and more than 3 people.
• Lower Quality. The internal resin of this water softener was designed over 10 years ago. Therefore, it lacks improvements made over the years and may not provide the same level of quality and longevity.
• May struggle with very hard water. The lifetime of the internal resin can depend on water hardness. Not only that, but water hardness levels also affect the flow rate of a water softener, and thus pressure of water in the home.
• Doesn’t last as long. A shorter warranty suggests this product is not designed to last as long as other Harvey models.
• Looks dated. Although a softener belongs under the kitchen sink, the age of this product definitely shows in its design.
• Hard to see when the salt is running low. The design does not include a see-through lid and therefore you will have to keep checking to see if your salt levels are low.

However, it has several limitations for standard family homes and it is likely worth paying more now, for a softener that is more reliable and lasts 2x as long, saving you money in the long run.
